COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Amanda Johnson entered the Lindsey Wilson College track & field record book twice on Saturday with the program's first Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Year award for the state of Kentucky and a school record in the indoor one-mile race walk.
Johnson earned the athlete of the year honor from USA Track & Field (USATF) after winning the Race Walk Athlete of the Year award the past three seasons.
The Morganfield, Ky., native is a three-time NAIA National Championship qualifier in the race walk. Blue Raider head coach Edwin Hagans expects his senior to qualify for her fourth this Friday at the Cedarville Invitational in Cedarville, Ohio.
"I expect Amanda to not have a problem qualifying on Friday," said Hagans. "She is my most consistent athlete. Whether it is cross country or track, she gives 100 percent all the time. I never have to tell her to try hard."
Johnson, whose father is a well decorated race walker, has been competing in the Olympic sport for eight years and has knocked a minute off her 3K time since arriving at Lindsey Wilson.
On Saturday, Johnson set the program record for the indoor mile at the Dartmouth Relay in Hanover, N.H., with a time of 8:02.11. The senior finished fourth overall as Lauren Forges of the Maine Race Walkers took the individual title with a time of 7:29.91.
The Lindsey Wilson men's and women's indoor track & field season gets underway at 3 p.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 15 at the Cedarville Invitational.
