COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Bill Shook has been named the tennis and volleyball coach at Lindsey Wilson College, athletics director Willis Pooler announced on Friday.
Shook comes to Lindsey Wilson after leading the Piedmont College volleyball program in 2008 and a 10-year volleyball coaching stint at Mars Hill College. He also served as tennis assistant coach for four years while at Mars Hill.
"Coach Shook was not only the obvious choice for our positions, but the very best person to lead our programs and our current and future student-athletes," Pooler said. "His passion and expertise for both tennis and volleyball were key components in Bill's hiring.
"I have the upmost confidence that we hired the right person for the job; one that will have a genuine interest in the success of our student-athletes as individuals while continuing our team success at the national level."
Shook led Piedmont to a 25-7 record and a runner-up finish in the Great South Athletic Conference last season. He averaged more than 16 wins per year in his decade at Mars Hill.
In addition to his tennis coaching at Mars Hill, Shook holds a United States Professional Tennis Registry Teaching Certification and has 28 years of competitive experience, including playing collegiately at the University of Maryland.
"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to coach the two sports that I love in such an ideal setting as Lindsey Wilson College," Shook said."I'd like to thank athletic director Willis Pooler, Chris Wells, and the rest of the search committee for extending me the honor of representing such a strong academic and athletic institution."
Shook's volleyball experience extends beyond collegiate coaching. He served as apprentice coach for the USA women's volleyball team prior to the Olympics in 1992 (Barcelona) and 1995 (Atlanta). He also has extensive experience at the club level through working camps throughout the nation, including in Louisville.
Shook has more than 25 years of private tennis instruction and has served as a tennis official in the Mid-Atlantic Region for the United State Tennis Association.
Earlier this year, Shook became just the fourth male coach to be inducted into the Howard County, Md., Women's Athletics Hall of Fame.
Shook guided Centennial High School volleyball to seven county championships and four state titles in nine years. His volleyball teams amassed a 174-25 record. He led the Centennial tennis program to a 127-13 record while collecting eight county titles and three state titles, including coaching two state doubles champions.
Shook replaces Chuck Amshoff, who resigned in late May.
Shook inherits a women's tennis program that has been to four straight NAIA national semifinals and a men's tennis program that has reached the national tournament in each of the last seven seasons. He takes over a volleyball program that went 28-9 last season and reached the Mid-South Conference Tournament finals.
"I look forward to working with the returning athletes of the tennis and volleyball programs," Shook said. "I'm just as excited to work with the future student-athletes which will find LWC to be the perfect fit for pursuing a degree while being challenged to be the best that they can be and contending for a national championship in their sport."
